Another example of the cult of personality that surrounds Pres. Obama

That's what came to mind as I read this post over at law professor William A. Jacobson's blog Legal Insurrection:  Kill lists for me, but not for thee.  The post discusses the current administration's move, spurred on by the possibility that Mitt Romney would win the presidential election, to create rules to govern the use of drone strikes against terrorists. The administration evidently believes that unfettered discretion regarding the kill list for terrorists can be entrusted to Pres. Obama, but not to any other elected president going forward. The One may be trusted with such power, power that can legitimately held by no other official.  While I would agree that such discretionary power is dangerous, I would tend to say that it is so dangerous that no person should hold it -- including Pres. Obama.

The most disturbing thing about the Obama administration by far is the messianic conviction that his supporters have regarding him.  This is something previously unknown in our nation's history.  Of all the fanatical cults that have grown up around presidents -- Jefferson, Jackson, FDR, Kennedy -- this one is truly unique in the level of nearly religious faith posited in Pres. Obama.

Updates:  the idolatry keeps getting weirder and weirder.
What's next?

Hello Mark,

Very interesting post. Everything depends on public support and Obama is a great speaker although he doesn't walk his talk. But the American public are overwhelmed by his speech. Now that the choice is made, your country will have to bear him for another four years. Hope he does something good.

I suggest you get rid of the word verification in your blog since this makes posting a comment very difficult.

Best wishes to you and your family,
Joseph

Joseph,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Much appreciated. I got rid of word verification on your advice -- hopefully this will make commenting easier!

As for the president, I am not optimistic about his leadership for the country, but as you said, the choice has been made and we have to hope for the best. At this point, I am hopeful that he won't be able to do too much damage! You are right that people are taken in by him because of his ability to speak well, even though the actions of his administration are increasingly destructive. Hopefully America will be able to bounce back from the policies he is inflicting on the country. Time will tell.
