"Murmur of maternal lamentation"

What is that sound high in the air Murmur of maternal lamentation Who are those hooded hordes swarming Over endless plains, stumbling in cracked earth Ringed by the flat horizon only What is the city over the mountains Cracks and reforms and bursts in the violet air Falling towers Jerusalem Athens Alexandria Vienna London Unreal
--T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land (1922).

Hello Mark!

Very ominous, foreboding and touching poem!

Thanks for sharing!

On that evil day 11th Sept. I got up in the night since I was not getting sleep and switched on the TV. I was idly changing channels and was interested to see a huge building collapse and a plane approaching another tower. It looked like a movie in slow motion.
I was interested and then I heard the commentator saying that a plane has crashed into one of the twin towers and anoter plane was about to crash into the second tower.I held my breath and watched in consternation. The plane slowly but surely crashed into the second tower and I saw the massive building collapse. I was shocked and horrified. Then the TV showed people running helter skelter for their lives.

I was a mute witness to the great loss of those majestic buildings and tragic loss of thousands of innocent human lives.

It was a horrifying scene that I can never forget.

Best wishes!

I remember being at home in the morning with my grandmother. I had turned on the t.v. in time to hear the news commentators talking about a plane that crashed into one of the towers. Then I also saw the second. It was unbelievable and as joseph has said, horrifying. Lord Jesus have mercy on your servants.

Thank you both for sharing. It was a horrible day.

Eternal rest grant unto the dead, O Lord, and let thy perpetual light shine upon them. Amen.
